As an accessible taxicab driver, you need to take a Commission-approved training course. The training is in how to service passengers with disabilities and help passengers who use wheelchairs in and out of the vehicle.
TLC Rule 58-20(c)(3) states that the Vehicle Owner must pay for this training course. The Accessible Taxicab Owner is responsible for paying any fees required to train each of the drivers they employ to drive their accessible taxicab. If you, as a driver, are paying the cost for this course out of your pocket you should speak to the Accessible Taxicab Owner or their Agent about reimbursement for the cost of the course. Issues with the owner or their Agent pertaining to this training and\or reimbursement for the cost of the course can be reported to the TLC by calling (718) 391-5501. The TLC will not reimburse you for the cost of the course but a complaint can be filed with the Agency.
At the end of the training, you will get a certificate of completion from the training course. You must show this to the accessible medallion owner before driving the vehicle, and you need to keep a copy with you in the vehicle. As a driver of a wheelchair accessible taxicab, you must help a wheelchair passenger to and from the sidewalk curb. You must also secure the passenger and his/her belongings in the vehicle. Time for unloading may not be charged.
