Rangers News
2008-09 Season Preview

The 2007-08 New York Rangers returned to the playoffs for the third consecutive season; however a heart-breaking loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round left the Rangers with much room for improvement in the 2008-09 season.

In a busy off-season, the Rangers revamped their lineup. The most notable changes were the departures of top line players Sean Avery to the Dallas Stars and Jarmir Jagr to the Russian club Avangard Omsk. Left wing Martin Straka also left the Big Apple to return to his former Czech club, HC Lasselsberger Plzen. The Rangers will look to fill these voids with free agent acquisition Markus Naslund, who will join returning players Brandon Dubinksy and Petr Prucha to form a solid front line. In an effort to boost an offense that ranked 23rd in goals scored last season, the Rangers also picked up veteran center Nikolai Zherdev who is well know for his playmaking abilities. Scott Gomez returns after a 70-point 2007-08 season that included three assists in the playoff series against Pittsburgh. In addition, the Rangers signed All-Star defenseman Wade Redden who will bolster the defensive unit and add another gifted stick-handler in the neutral zone. New York’s star goalie Henrik Lundqvist will also return for a fourth year with the Rangers. He has been nominated for the Vezina Trophy in each of his three seasons in the NHL and was named the Rangers Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season last year.

The Rangers selected defenseman Michael Del Zotto with their first pick (20th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. In 64 games for the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League this past season, Del Zotto totaled 16 goals and 47 assists. The Rangers provided help for their offense in the second round (51st overall) by taking goal-scoring center Derek Stepan, a high-schooler from Minnesota. The Rangers then selected center Evgeny Grachev from Russia with their first pick in the third round (75th overall) before taking defenseman Tomas Kundratek of the Czech Republic with their second pick of the round (90th overall).

Off-Season Moves

Rangers Sign Free Agents Naslund and Kalinin

July 4, 2008 - The New York Rangers signed left wing Markus Naslund to a two-year deal, as they continue to revamp their roster following their second-round playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 35-year-old Naslund scored 25 goals and contributed 30 assists last season for the Vancouver Canucks, where he has played the past 12 seasons and served as captain since 2000. The signing of Naslund also signaled the exit of Rangers’ captain Jaromir Jagr, who has now signed a two-year deal with Russian squad Avangard Omsk. The Rangers also added depth to their defense by signing Dmitri Kalinin to a one-year deal. Kalinin had one goal and eight assists last year as a defenseman for the Buffalo Sabres.

Rangers Acquire Zherdev and Fritsche

July 2, 2008 - The New York Rangers acquired forwards Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman. Zherdev, best known for his play-making ability, netted 26 goals and a team-leading 35 assists for Columbus last year and should make a significant impact on the Rangers offense. Fritsche added 10 goals and 12 assists for the Blue Jackets. The move is expected to add much-needed speed and scoring to the Rangers as the team attempts to rebuild its squad around a core of youthful and energetic players.

Rangers Sign All-Star Defenseman Wade Redden

July 1, 2008 - The New York Rangers signed defenseman Wade Redden to a six-year deal on the first day of NHL free agency, adding one of the league’s premier defenders to a team looking to advance deeper into the playoffs next season. Redden is widely-regarded for his ability to help set up the offense with quick passes from the defensive zone. He is expected to bolster the Rangers’ offense, which averaged less than 2.6 goals per game last year and ranked 23rd in goals scored among 30 NHL teams. The 31-year-old Redden has spent his entire 11-year career with Ottawa, where he has tallied 101 goals and 309 assists.
