New Balance Games
What: New Balance Games
When: January 24, 2009
Where:: New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory

The New Balance Games will attract over 5,000 high school and elite runners from around the world. Over the years, the meet has been highlighted by exceptional performances such as Alan Webb running the first sub-4 minute indoor mile by a high school runner in 2001.

The New Balance Games will feature track and field athletes competing in over 30 events including relays, mile runs, pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump. The premier races of the day will be highlighted by an elite men’s and women’s mile run which will feature several of the top runners in the nation. The elite women will run at 2:10pm and the men will line up at 2:40pm.

The Games include freshmen, sophomore and varsity boys’ and girls’ races of 800m and 1600m relays. Varsity boys’ and girls’ teams will also compete in 1600m, 3200m and spring medley relays. The field portion of the events includes boys’ and girls’ shot put, long jump, triple jump and pole vault.

During the meet, New Balance will present the Marty Glickman Award to the most outstanding high school program in New York State. The winning team and runner-up will receive a $10,000 and $5,000 scholarship, respectively.

Marty Glickman was a multi-sport star for James Madison High School in Brooklyn. While in high school he won the indoor and outdoor city and state championship in the 100-yard dash, and led Madison’s football team to a State Championship with an undefeated season. Glickman went on to be a college football star at Syracuse University and was named an All-American. He qualified to compete in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, but was denied because he was Jewish. Following his athletic career, Glickman became a Hall-of-Fame sports broadcaster for the New York Knicks, New York Giants, New York Rangers, New York Jets, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees and Yonkers Raceway.
