Jimmy V Classic
Jimmy V Men's Basketball Classic

When: Tuesday, December 9, 2008
Where:: Madison Square Garden
Time:: Game #1: 7:00pm - Davidson vs. West Virginia Univ.
Game #2: 9:00pm - Texas vs. Villanova

Four of the nation’s top men’s basketball programs will meet at the 2008 Jimmy V Classic in Madison Square Garden in support of the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Davidson will face off against West Virginia University in the first game of the doubleheader and the University of Texas will play Villanova in the second game.

Davidson stunned the nation last year by making it to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s Elite Eight. Their team features sophomore Guard Stephen Curry, the leading returning scorer for all of Division I NCAA basketball. Coach Bob Huggins returns to the WVU Mountaineers for his second year at the helm following their Big East semifinal exit and subsequent Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Texas Longhorns, also an Elite Eight team, appear poised to succeed this season. They return four starters including A.J. Abrams, one of their top scorers. The Longhorns will face Shane Clark and the Villanova Wildcats, who look to rebound after being eliminated from last year’s NCAA tournament in the Sweet Sixteen.

Proceeds from the Jimmy V Classic benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The V Foundation, founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, has raised more than $60 million and has awarded hundreds of cancer research grants nationwide. Valvano, who won a NCAA title as head coach of the North Carolina State Wolfpack in 1983, lost his own battle with cancer on April 28, 1993 at the age of 47.
