The Aeropostale Holiday Festival, the nation’s longest running holiday college basketball tournament, will once again be held at Madison Square Garden. The Holiday Festival will feature the Columbia Lions squaring off against the Virginia Tech Hokies, as well as the St. John’s Red Storm battling the Marist Red Foxes in two days of double-header action.

Virginia Tech will return to defend their title as they take on Columbia in the first day of action; while former St. John’s assistant and now Marist head coach Chuck Martin will look to lead the Red Foxes against his former team in the day’s second game. The winners from the first day’s action will play each other in the championship game, while the two losers will face off in the consolation game.

The Aéropostale Holiday Festival, the nation's longest running college basketball holiday tournament, was once again held this year at Madison Square Garden. Virginia Tech, led by A.D. Vassallo and his 16 points, defeated St. John’s by a score of 54-48 to win their first Aéropostale Holiday Festival tournament. In the consolation game, Marist overtook Hofstra by a score of 73-67. Senior Louie McCroskey led Marist with 18 points.

Championship: Virginia Tech 54 - St. John’s 48
Virginia Tech improved their overall record at Madison Square Garden to 11-2 with a 54-48 victory over St. John’s in the championship game of the Aéropostale Holiday Festival. The low-scoring game featured poor shooting and sloppy play as each team committed 20 turnovers. The Hokies finished 18-for-49 from the field (36.7 percent), while the Red Storm were 15-for-53 (28.3 percent). A.D. Vasallo led all Virginia Tech scorers with 16 points while Deron Washington added 10 points and eight rebounds. Anthony Mason Jr. led the way for St. John’s scoring 12 points and Eugene Lawrence contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Consolation: Marist 73 - Hofstra 67
Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch guided Marist to a third place finish in the Aéropostale Holiday Festival. Marist went 6-7 from the free throw line in the final 1:11 to clinch the victory. Marist’s Jay Gavin, who made four free throws in the final 24 seconds of play, scored 16 points and Louie McCroskey scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Nathaniel Lester scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Hofstra.

First Round Games 12/28/07

Virginia Tech 84 – Hofstra 59
The Virginia Tech Hokies easily defeated the shorthanded Hofstra Pride 84-59 in the opening game of the Aéropostale Holiday Festival. Hofstra, playing without the nation’s second leading scorer Antoine Agudio (26.8 ppg), was no match for the Hokies’ potent offense. Virginia Tech had three different players post 17 points, led by freshman guard Jeff Allen’s 17 point, nine rebound effort. Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins led the way for Hofstra, scoring13 points and dishing out four assists.

St. John’s 62 - Marist 59
St. John’s overcame a late rally by Marist to hold on for a 62-59 victory. St. John’s held an 11 point lead with less than five minutes to play; however, Marist battled back to tie the game at 57 with 1:36 left in regulation. Free throws by Eugene Lawrence and Larry Wright sealed the three-point victory. Anthony Mason Jr. and Tomas Jasiulionis each poured in 12 points for St. John’s and Justin Burrell chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Jay Gavin led Marist scorers with 15 points.

Antoine Agudio scored 24 points to lead Hofstra to a victory over St. John's in the championship game of the Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. St. John’s was a two-time defending champion in the tournament and had won seven straight games overall. St. John's started out a 1-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half, falling behind 34-27. St. John's closed within five points at 49-44, but Agudio, the tournament MVP, hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game to start a 14-2 run that would ultimately end St. Johns hopes of a 3rd straight championship.

Consolation: St. Joseph’s 58, Boston University 53
Ahmad Nivins led the St. Joseph's Hawks with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the consolation game. The Hawks broke out to an early 20-8 lead and never looked back. Redshirt freshman Tyler Morris had a game-high 17 points for Boston University.

First Round Games 12/28/06

St John’s 45, Boston University 44
Boston University senior co-captain Omari Peterkin missed a buzzer-beating jump hook off the side of the rim as St. Johns advanced to the championship game by a score of 45-44. Peterkin led Boston University with nine points, 5 blocks and a team-high 11 rebounds. St. Johns was led Avery Patterson and his 16 points.

Hofstra 65, St. Joseph's 63
Senior guard Loren Stokes hit an 18-foot jumper from the top of the key with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to give Hofstra a 65-63 win over Saint Joseph's. Loren Stokes and Carlos Rivera led Hofstra with 15 points apiece. Ahmad Nivins led the way for Saint Joseph's with 14 points.

The 2005 Panasonic Holiday Festival featured two nights of action. On the first night, St. Peter’s squared off against the University of Massachusetts and defending champion St. John’s faced Columbia.

GAME RECAPS

Championship: St John’s 51 Massachusetts 49
Sparked by an airtight defense and an opportunistic offense, St. John's knocked off Massachusetts (51-49) to capture its second straight Panasonic Holiday Festival championship and its 14th title overall. With the score tied at 49-49, St. John's Aaron Spears scored down low on a feed from Lamont Hamilton with 32.5 seconds left. The Minutemen had a chance to tie it, but Chris Lowe missed a contested layup as time expired. St. John's was led by Hamilton's 12 points and tournament MVP Eugene Lawrence, who had nine points and seven rebounds (after getting 12 points and eight assists Tuesday). St. John’s played terrific defense as they limited UMass to 31.9% shooting. Stephane Lasme led UMass with 15 points and four blocked shots.

Consolation: St. Peter's 63 Columbia 54:
Keydren Clark led St. Peter’s sinking 16 of his 23 points in the second half of the consolation game. Todd Sowell and Raul Orta each had 12 points for the Peacocks while Justin Armstrong led Columbia with 20 points.

First Round Games 12/27/05

St John’s 63 Columbia 39
Sparked by a strong perimeter game and defensive effort, the Red Storm breezed by Columbia (63-39) at Madison Square Garden. St John’s freshman Anthony Mason Jr. scored a career-high 15 points and sophomore Eugene Lawrence had a season-high 12 points and eight assists. St. John's used a 10-3 run to establish a 47-26 lead with 12:56 left in the game. Justin Armstrong and John Baumann each had eight points for Columbia.

Massachusetts 66 St. Peter's 49
Stephane Lasme had 21 points and eight blocks and Jeff Viggiano 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead Massachusetts in the first game of the Holiday Festival doubleheader. Former Rice standout Keydren Clark led St. Peter's with 22 points.

The 2004 Dreyfus Holiday Festival

On December 29, 1934, NYU defeated Notre Dame 25-18 in front of a record crowd of 16,138 in the first-ever college basketball double header that was played in Madison Square Garden.

The Holiday Festival, which marks the 68th anniversary of that game, is now one of several doubleheaders every season in the World's Most Famous Arena. The winners of each game on December 28th will face off against each other in the championship game on December 30th. The consolation game beginning at 6:30 pm will precede the championship game.


Championship Game- St. John’s 63 North Carolina State 45

Daryll Hill scored 19 points to lead St. John's to a 63-45 victory over #17 North Carolina State in the championship game of the Holiday Festival. The Red Storm led by a score of 27-10 at halftime and pulled away by holding the Wolfpack to no field goals for 14 minutes. Julius Hodge, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, went 0-for-6 from the field in the first half and finished with 19 points on 7-for-21 shooting for N.C. State. It was St. John's 39th appearance in the annual tournament and this was the team’s 13th title (the last coming in 1996). The win also marked the Red Storm's first victory over a ranked team since a 72-71 defeat of #6 Duke on March 2, 2003 at Madison Square Garden. Daryll Hill was named the tournament MVP.

Consolation Game- Columbia 64 Canisius 58

Freshman Brett Loscalzo more than doubled his career-high with 19 points and Columbia beat Canisius 64-58 in the consolation game of the Holiday Festival. The win was the first for the Lions at Madison Square Garden since beating New York University by a score of 70-56 in 1988, and got them within three games of matching last season's total wins. This starting record (7-3) is Columbia's best since going 8-3 in 1978-79. Chuck Harris and Dewitt Doss each had 15 points for Canisius.

Semifinals

Daryll Hill scored 23 points and Lamont Hamilton added 21 to lead St. John's to a 71-51 victory over Canisius and Cameron Bennerman scored a career-high 24 points to lead #17 North Carolina State to an 84-74 victory over Columbia in the opening round of the Dreyfus Holiday Festival. With 13:00 remaining, Columbia held a slim two-point lead over North Carolina State and although the Lions couldn't hold off the Wolfpack, they showed that they could compete with one of the best teams in college basketball.

2003 Dreyfus Holiday Festival Results

Championship Game

Tim Begley scored 13 points, including an off-balance jumper with 42 seconds left, to lead Penn to a 49-47 victory over the two-time defending champion Manhattan Jaspers in the championship game of the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden.

Luis Flores, the MVP of the last two Festivals, had 20 points for the Jaspers, who were trying to become just the second school to win the tournament three years in a row. St. John's won four straight from 1984-87.

Jeff Schiffner of the Quakers was selected the MVP this year despite scoring just four points on 1-for-12 shooting, including 0-for-6 on 3-pointers, in the title game. He hit the game-winning jumper from the foul line with less than a second left in double overtime in Penn's 63-61 first-round win over St. John's on Sunday.

Consolation Game

Grady Reynolds scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, including five in the final 57 seconds, to lead St. John's past Holy Cross 64-61 in the third-place game of the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden.

The win was the first in three games for interim coach Kevin Clark, who replaced Mike Jarvis when he was fired Dec. 19. Kyle Cuffe had 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for St. John's who lost 63-61 in double overtime to Penn in the first round. Freshman Darryll Hill added 13 points and Elijah Ingram had 11 for St John's while Nate Lufkin scored 17 points and Jave Meade added 12 points for Holy Cross.

Sophomore Luis Flores (New York, NY) scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Manhattan Jaspers to a 69-58 victory over MAAC rival Iona College in the Championship Game of the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival presented by Foot Locker. Flores was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, totaling 37 points and 13 rebounds in Manhattan's two victories. The tournament title was Manhattan's first since 1973, and its third in 17 appearances in the Holiday Festival dating back to 1952.
