National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame
What: College Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
When: Tuesday, December 9, 2008
Where:: Waldorf=Astoria Hotel

13 of college football’s all-time best players and two coaches will be given the sport’s highest honor, when they are inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2008. This year’s class will include quarterback Troy Aikman (UCLA), 1959 Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon (LSU) and Coach Lou Holtz (Notre Dame).

Troy Aikman, a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Fame selection, had a storied college career at UCLA. In 1988, Aikman led the Bruins to a #1 ranking as well as being named as a consensus First-Team All-America selection. In addition, he was named the 1988 AFCA "Coaches Choice" Player of the year award and he finished third in Heisman Trophy voting. He was also named Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1987 and led UCLA to two bowl game victories.

Billy Cannon played three seasons with LSU (1957-59) and he led the Tigers to its first AP national championship in 1958. In 1959, a year after leading LSU to a perfect season, Cannon won the Heisman Trophy. Also the No. 20 worn by Cannon was retired after the season. It is the only number that LSU has retired.

Louis Holtz is the only coach in NCAA history to lead six different programs to bowl games and is the only coach to guide four different programs to final top 20 rankings. Even though he is best-remembered for leading Notre Dame to a national championship in 1988, he also coached at William & Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, Minnesota and South Carolina, finishing his career ranked eighth among all-time coaches with 249 wins. Holtz was also named as Coach of the Year in 1977.

The College Football Hall of Fame was created in 1951 by the National Football Foundation. It is located in South Bend, Indiana. Today more than 900 legendary players and coaches from NCAA Division I-A, I-AA, II, III and the NAIA are enshrined in the Hall. All inductees will be officially enshrined at the Hall during the summer of 2009.
