MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI AND POLICE COMMISSIONER HOWARD SAFIR TODAY ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT CALLING FOR THE END OF PAROLE IN NEW YORK STATE AND FOR THE STATE ASSEMBLY TO PASS THE "POLICE OFFICER VINCENT GUIDICE MEMORIAL ACT":

"The release of Officer Vincent Guidice's killer after serving less than three years in prison coupled with this week's brutal Central Park murder of a woman, allegedly by a parolee, underscores the need to eliminate parole. New York State should -- like twenty-eight other states and the federal government -- abolish parole for all offenders and establish truth in sentencing. Furthermore, we urge the State Assembly to enact the Police Officer Vincent Guidice Memorial Act. Had this legislation been in effect when he was murdered, his killer would now be facing a possible 25-year prison sentence, instead of walking the streets a free man."
