MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "REV. DR. BEASLEY WAY" ON TOMPKINS AVENUE BETWEEN BROAD STREET AND VANDERBILT AVENUE IN STATEN ISLAND

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 412, sponsored by Council Members O'Donovan and Abel, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Rev. Dr. Beasley Way" on Tompkins Avenue between Broad Street and Vanderbilt Avenue in Staten Island.

The Rev. Dr. William Herman Beasley was born on April 27, 1929 in Edenton, North Carolina and moved to Staten Island in 1959.

Rev. Dr. Beasley graduated from the School of Theology of Boulden Seminary in Wilmington, Delaware and received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Eastern-American University. After receiving the call to ministry, Rev. Dr. Beasley was ordained a Deacon in 1971 and was appointed to the pastorate of Stapleton Union American Methodist Church in 1974. During his time as pastor, he organized an Outreach Ministry for the needy and homeless, as well as a food pantry and soup kitchen for the community.

Rev. Dr. Beasley passed away on April 4, 1998.

Therefore, in view of his dedication and service to his community, it is fitting that Tompkins Avenue, between Broad Street and Vanderbilt Avenue in Staten Island be named "Rev. Dr. Beasley Way."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
