CERT Disaster Training at Randall's Island

On November 15, 2009, members of New York City's Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) met at the Fire Academy on Randall's Island for a day of disaster training. The drill was designed to help CERT volunteers refresh their response skills and to foster teamwork among multiple CERT teams.

The drill took place at the Fire Academy's "Disaster Row," where CERT volunteers responded to a mock incident involving a city bus explosion, a gas leak, and a building evacuation.

CERT volunteers practiced extinguishing fires.

Team members practiced evacuating victims played by Fire Department mannequins and other CERT volunteers.

As part of their training, team members learned to identify the severity of victims' injuries.

Volunteers practiced redirecting traffic and creating a perimeter surrounding the incident.
