Office to Combat Domestic Violence - Emergency Shelter & Housing

Emergency Shelter
According to statistics from the Human Resources Administration, as of the end of 2010, there were 2,208 domestic violence emergency shelter beds citywide, a 35% increase since January 2002. In recognition of the need to increase shelter space for physically disabled domestic violence victims, a facility specially designed for disabled victims will be constructed.

Additionally, New York City provides shelter to families that have no permanent or temporary place to live, through the Department of Homeless Services Prevention Assistance and Temporary Housing (PATH) Office. Click here for more information.

Prior to this administration, shelter requests were on average three times higher than the number of available beds. This ratio has steadily decreased, and the City is closer to meeting the demand for shelter than ever before.
