Instructor Development Training

The mission of the Instructor Development Unit (IDU) is to provide the requisite knowledge and skill to all Department instructors. The Methods of Instructtion on Course (MOI) attempts to accomplish this by emphasizing the latest instructional techniques specific to adult audiences. IDU administers two Department training courses; an eleven day Methods of Instruction Course and a one day Instructor Evaluator Workshop. In additon, IDU is responsible for maintaining official records of NYPD certified instructors and recertifying in-service personnel. The Methods of Instruction Course (MOI) is certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and is presented by the Instructor Development Unit. All potential NYPD instructors are required to complete the 77 hour MOI Course. Upon successful completion, instructors receive an official New York State DCJS certification and three recommended college credits from the National College Credit Recommendation Service.  The Instructor Evaluator Workshop is the second course offered by the Instructor Development Unit. This four hours course is available to New York State DCJS certified instructors that have a minimum of three years of training experience. This course certifies eligible instructors to be evaluators, allowing them to recertify other New York State DCJS Instructors.
