NYPD Legal Bureau provides assistance to law enforcement personnel regarding Department legal matters only.
The mission of the Legal Bureau is (1) to support the Department in preventing crime and reducing fear by assisting its members in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; (2) to ensure that the policies and practices of the Department are lawful and are fairly applied; (3) to develop legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns; (4) to further the quality of life of New York City through the focused and aggressive use of civil enforcement remedies.
