What to Do With Vehicle License Plates

Most vehicle license plates must be surrendered to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) .

Plates that are replaced by custom plates or personalized plates may be recycled with other designated metal, glass, plastic recyclables collected by Sanitation. To protect against fraud, the DMV  instructs the public to deface plates with a permanent marker and recycle them on different recycling collection days.
