New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) elevators are an essential component of the public housing infrastructure. NYCHA's 3,338 elevators represent one of the largest elevator fleets in the nation.
NYCHA recently completed a rigorous evaluation of its elevator fleet and operations. As part of this evaluation, NYCHA conducted elevator summits with residents, resident leaders, union officials, NYCHA employees, and other interested parties to hear their concerns regarding elevator safety, service and operations, and to develop a plan to address these concerns. This collaboration has resulted in NYCHA's Elevator Service and Safety Plan (ESSP).
Modernizing and maintaining an elevator fleet of NYCHA's size and complexity is an ongoing and lengthy process. However, under the ESSP, NYCHA has already taken significant steps to improve this process, including: hiring additional staff; increasing the number of elevator teams; improving training for new and existing staff; centralizing elevator operations; enhancing the inspection process; and voluntarily updating existing elevators to meet, and in some instances exceed, new code requirements.
Through the implementation of the ESSP, NYCHA is ensuring its elevators are safe and can meet the daily needs of residents and the public. Click on the links below to see the various components of the ESSP.
