|  NYCHA's "Green" Initiatives The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is fully committed to providing safe, affordable housing for more than 400,000 residents in a cost efficient and environmentally conscious manner. To that effect, NYCHA aims to become a leader among landlords when it comes to advancing PlaNYC, the City's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make New York City the world's first great sustainable city of the 21st century. Mayor Bloomberg and NYCHA Chairman Rhea Unveil New Energy Efficiency Program at Castle Hill Houses August 5, 2009 Mayor Bloomberg and Chairman John B. Rhea unveiled NYCHA's new energy efficiency demonstration project at the Castle Hill Houses in the Bronx. By 2011 it will lower energy usage by 2.25 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, reduce carbon emissions by more than 4,900 tons annually, and save $1.2 million a year. NYCHA Celebrates Earth Week with Tree Plantings April 20, 2009 Three hundred community volunteers and invited New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents gathered at Pomonok Houses in Flushing, Queens to plant trees on the grounds of the 56-year-old development. This initiative was the first of several tree planting volunteer events that are scheduled to occur throughout the spring.
