NYCHA's "Green" Initiatives

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is fully committed to providing safe, affordable housing for more than 400,000 residents in a cost efficient and environmentally conscious manner. To that effect, NYCHA aims to become a leader among landlords when it comes to advancing PlaNYC, the City's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make New York City the world's first great sustainable city of the 21st century.

Below are examples of some of the strides that NYCHA is making towards creating a healthier environment.

Keeping it Green at Breevort Houses

Mayor Bloomberg and NYCHA Chairman Rhea Unveil New Energy Efficiency Program at Castle Hill Houses
August 5, 2009
Mayor Bloomberg and Chairman John B. Rhea unveiled NYCHA's new energy efficiency demonstration project at the Castle Hill Houses in the Bronx. By 2011 it will lower energy usage by 2.25 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year, reduce carbon emissions by more than 4,900 tons annually, and save $1.2 million a year.

In Public Housing, Talking Up the Recycling Bin

Gloria Allen, an 82-year old New York City Housing Authority resident, gathers neighbors at General Grant Houses in Manhattan where she lives, to offer recycling tips. She helped to start a movement to introduce recycling to the residents.

NYCHA Residents Successfully Train for Green Collar Jobs

The first graduating class of the MillionTrees NYC Training Program consisted of six NYCHA residents. Program graduates are prepared for a variety of 'green-collar' jobs throughout their training.

NYCHA brought the third in its series of SpeakingGreen lectures to Baruch College last April, where public housing residents, the college community, and a cross section of concerned citizens heard a distinguished panel of 'green' leaders discuss strategies to protect the City's living environment and preserve public housing.

NYCHA Celebrates Earth Week with Tree Plantings
April 20, 2009
Three hundred community volunteers and invited New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents gathered at Pomonok Houses in Flushing, Queens to plant trees on the grounds of the 56-year-old development. This initiative was the first of several tree planting volunteer events that are scheduled to occur throughout the spring. The event was a collaboration between MillionTreesNYC, the New York Restoration Project and NYCHA.

Queensbridge South Goes Green with CFL Kick Off

Corporate volunteers gathered at Queensbridge South, the country's largest public housing development to begin installing 9,600 Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) in 1,600 apartments.

New Partnership Helps Seniors Afford Green Living
October 26, 2007
Senior residents at NYCHA's New Lane Houses in Staten Island can now afford to replace their incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL), thanks to a partnership between non-profit group, RelightNY, a generous $90,000 donation from financial institution HSBC and the hard work of Public Energy Solutions employees.

NYCHA Helps Brooklyn Residents
Switch to Energy-Saving Bulbs

NYCHA is replacing more than 50,000 incandescent light bulbs in Brooklyn developments with energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs). Helping residents make the switch will reduce the demand for electricity during the hottest summer months, and save money.
