NYCHA Board Approves Sale of Land to School Construction Authority for Construction of Middle and High School

On July 1st, the New York City Housing Authority Board approved the sale of a parcel of land at Thurgood Marshall Plaza in Harlem, to the School Construction Authority for $5.2 million. The site will be the new home of the Community Health Academy of the Heights, a combination middle and high school.

NYCHA Chairman and HUD Deputy Secretary Tour Lower Manhattan Developments
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary, Ron Sims visited two NYCHA developments on Manhattan's Lower East Side recently. Touring the grounds of Lower East Side Houses (LES) II and Lillian Wald Houses, HUD Deputy Secretary Sims and NYCHA Chairman, John B. Rhea reviewed the roof replacement job at LES II, which is being funded in part with federal monies.

Chairman Rhea Greeted Warmly by NYCHA Residents and Employees
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Chairman, John B. Rhea spent his first day on the job engaging staff and residents at NYCHA properties throughout the five boroughs, and soliciting feedback on how NYCHA can improve service for residents and provide employees with the support they need.

Sonia Sotomayor, former NYCHA Resident and President Obama’s Nominee for Supreme Court Justice
The New York City Housing Authority proudly congratulates one of its own, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, formerly of Bronxdale Houses, on her nomination to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama. If Judge Sotomayor's nomination is approved by the U.S. Senate within the next few months, she will be the first Latina to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

New Federal Funding Will Support 70 Shovel-Ready Projects throughout NYCHA Developments

NYCHA celebrates 75 years of providing public housing this year. On February 17, 1934 New York City Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia filed a certificate establishing the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) as the first public housing authority in the country.

Section 8 Voucher Holders Can Now Rent a NYCHA Apartment
For the first time, holders of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)-issued Section 8 vouchers, have an opportunity to rent an apartment in one of NYCHA's 21 City-and-State-built developments. This helps thousands of voucher holders find affordable housing in New York City. Interested Section 8 voucher holders must register their interest in an apartment here on the NYCHA website.
