NYCHA manages and maintains 345 conventional public housing developments throughout the five boroughs of New York, encompassing 181,000 apartments for over 417,000 low- and moderate-income residents. Families who live in NYCHA housing pay no more than 30% of their incomes for rent.

It is virtually impossible to establish an average waiting time for a family to be reached on the waiting list for conventional public housing. Information from eligible applicants is placed in a computerized program which impartially selects applicants according to their borough choice, apartment size required, the applicant’s priority status and the date of the application.
