As part of its landmark report All Our Children: Strategies to Prevent Homelessness, Strengthen Services and Build Support for LGBTQ Youth, the New York City Commission for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Runaway and Homeless Youth noted that LGBTQ youth are disproportionally represented among New York City's homeless and runaway youth, and that those who identify as LGBTQ are even more vulnerable than heterosexual homeless youth, due to factors such as family rejection, high rates of mental illness, and greater use of survival strategies that increase risk for HIV/AIDS.As part of its landmark report All Our Children: Strategies to Prevent Homelessness, Strengthen Services and Build Support for LGBTQ Youth, the New York City Commission for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Runaway and Homeless Youth noted that LGBTQ youth are disproportionally represented among New York City's homeless and runaway youth, and that those who identify as LGBTQ are even more vulnerable than heterosexual homeless youth, due to factors such as family rejection, high rates of mental illness, and greater use of survival strategies that increase risk for HIV/AIDS.

AAPD has chosen New York City for the 2012 DMD National Launch
On Wednesday, October 17, 2012, MOPD will once again serve as the local coordinator for National Disability Mentoring Day (DMD). Beginning in 1999 as a White House initiative, DMD has become a large-scale national and international effort to promote career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through hands-on career exploration, on-site job shadowing and ongoing mentoring. DMD is nationally hosted by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the largest cross-disability membership organization in the country. In 2011, DMD connected nearly 16,500 students and job seekers with disabilities with thousands of employers in more than 250 locations across all 50 states.

Every year, AAPD chooses a local DMD program to host the DMD National Launch. This year, in honor of Matthew Sapolin, AAPD has chosen New York City for the 2012 DMD National Launch and will join us in celebrating his legacy as we continue our efforts to promote disability employment awareness.

Verbal Description and Touch Tours at the Rubin Museum of Art
The Rubin Museum of Art, a cultural and educational institution dedicated to the art of the Himalayas, is now offering Verbal Description and Touch Tours for audiences who are partially sighted and blind. Tours are one-hour in length and take visitors on a journey that interweaves the arts, history, religion, and culture of the Himalayas. Guides provide participants with close, careful descriptions of images and sculpture, helping them to form visualizations of the pieces.  Participants are then invited to touch objects, including sculpture, art materials, wood blocks, and ritual implements. Visitors also experience some of the sacred sounds and smells of the Himalayas through incense and traditional music. We are excited to announce that our Access Programs are now completely free of charge! Museum admission is waived for visitors with tour reservations.

Tours are offered on the second Tuesday of every month at 2 pm.

Space is limited and reservations are recommended to be made at least two weeks in advance. To reserve a spot on an upcoming public tour or to book a private tour, please contact: 212-620-5000 ext. 345 or reservations@rmanyc.org.
