Working With Landmarks: Research a Landmarked Property

The Landmarks Preservation Commission maintains several different types of records.  The Research Department archives material pertaining to the designation of individual buildings, interior landmarks, scenic landmarks, and historic districts.  The Preservation Department maintains records of alterations to these buildings after they are designated. The Enforcement Department keeps records of Warning Letters or Notices of Violation issued to property owners in violation of the Landmarks Law.  The Archaeology Department has an extensive library of archaeological reports for work that has been completed throughout the city, including many landmarked properties.  The Commission also maintains files related to environmental reviews.

Review of these records is by appointment only.  To review these records, please fill out the form “Appointment Request for Records Access.”  You do not need to fill out this form for copies of Warning Letters or Notices of Violation; contact the Enforcement Department directly.  Once your request is received, a staff person will contact you to set up an appointment.  Please read “Frequently Asked Questions” for suggestions on the best way to identify the information you need and to be sure the Commission possesses the type of records you need.   For example, we do not have the original plans for designated buildings; those plans are held by the Department of Buildings or the Municipal Archives.

Please read “Frequently Asked Questions” for suggestions on the best way to identify the information you need and to be sure the Commission maintains the type of records you need.
