Red Doors Opening in a Theatre Near You
April 1, 2006 The film Red Doors, which received the “Made in NY” award presented by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, has gone on to become a CBS pilot script and to secure distribution by Polychrome Pictures in association with Warner Bros. Home Video. The film, based upon the experiences of a Chinese-American family living in New York City, opens in theatres this summer.


Special Effects in the City
April 1, 2006 Need to add or subtract a few pounds -- or years -- from your leading man or lady? NBC’s Prosthetics Shop, provides the ingenuity behind some of the most creative and convincing stunts and special effects staged in New York City. Recently, the shop has turned Jimmy Fallon into a 400 pound man for “Saturday Night Live,” helped Conan O’Brien play “Apebraham Lincoln,” and provided the Halloween special effects makeup for “The Today Show.”


Emmys Go to City Station
April 1, 2006 On March 12, many of the City’s outstanding television programs were honored at the 49th annual New York Emmy Awards. At the ceremony, NYC TV took home awards in four categories:


Brooklyn Bygone at BAM
April 1, 2006 This month, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) will present “It Happened in Brooklyn,” a series in conjunction with Brooklyn historian John Manbeck, author of The Brooklyn Film, that looks at a bygone Brooklyn, now preserved in the movies.


Bedford, Bettie and Sopranos Snag Bus Shelters
April 1, 2006 The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting’s March bus shelter campaigns celebrated the "Bedford Diaries," The Notorious Bettie Page and "The Sopranos."


Backdrop NYC Spotlights City Indies
April 1, 2006 NYC TV’s new television show “Backdrop NYC” is putting the spotlight on the City’s independent filmmakers. The program, which airs on Wednesdays at 9:00 pm on Channel 25 and is hosted by Cat Greenleaf, profiles filmmakers as they “make it in New York,” the largest and important center of independent filmmaking in the United States. The program follows a diverse group of artists from the streets of the City to conference rooms to editing suites, as they tell their stories in the world’s entertainment capital.


Career Panel to Go Backstage
March 13, 2006 On Saturday April 8, the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (MOFTB) and The Living Room for Artists/Summer Play Festival (SPF) will present a panel entitled "Careers Backstage: An Overview of Job Opportunities Within Theatres." The panel is the second in a series of four addressing careers in theatre management, theatrical production and support and acting. The program is intended to educate New Yorkers about the diverse job roles in the industry, and connect them with resources, organizations and opportunities in the field.


City Tax Credit Reaches Allocation
March 6, 2006 New York City’s five percent tax credit related to the “Made in NY” incentive program has been so successful that the credits have now reached the $50 million allocated for the program. Productions which shoot in New York City can still take advantage of the State’s ten percent credit. The City will continue to accept applications for the five percent credit, and the next State legislative session will determine the future of the program.


Squid & Whale Surfaces With Oscar Noms
March 1, 2006 The "Made in NY" production The Squid and the Whale has been nominated for an Academy award for Best Original Screenplay! The film shot exclusively in New York City in July-August 2004, employing 50 New York City cast and crew members, and in 2005 received the Dramatic Directing Award and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance.
