Domino's Pizza shoots a commercial downtown to promote the idea of pizza originating in Brooklyn.
December 1, 2006 – When Domino’s Pizza wanted to shoot a commercial emphasizing the authenticity of their product, they went where anyone wishing to sell great pizza would go: Brooklyn. The commercial was shot in locations as busy and diverse as Broadway and North 5th Street, the Brooklyn Bridge, and beneath the Williamsburg Bridge.
The premise of the commercial is that two men are stuck under a bridge because they have clumsily piled mattresses vertically onto their vehicle. A traffic jam ensues. With nowhere to go, they decide to order Domino’s Pizza. This proves to be useful when the delivery boy, who rides up on a motorcycle, tells the men to fold their mattresses like they fold their pizza because they are, after all, in Brooklyn.
The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting facilitated production of the spot, particularly for the traffic jam scene, by providing free police assistance for traffic control. The agency was also successful in reversing the direction of traffic in two lanes near the Williamsburg Bridge, all the while leaving the bus lane open for commuters.
Location manager Karlin Mann said that “to promote the idea of pizza originating in Brooklyn”—and thus its authenticity—there is no more authentic location than the city of New York itself.”
