Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg speaks at the Tony Honors
December 1, 2004 - On October 26, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg congratulated the recipients of the 2004 Tony Honors and saluted Broadway for its contributions to the City of New York.
“Culturally, spiritually, economically, Broadway virtually defines the spirit of New York in the minds of millions around the world,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “It inspires people to visit here, and ... it inspires people to stay here, and devote their lives to it. Broadway is the Street of Dreams.”
The Mayor congratulated the recipients of the 2004 Tony Honors, presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing. He presented an award to advertising and marketing executive Nancy Coyne. At the event, the cast of Big River was recognized for being the first Broadway musical to be performed in both English and American Sign Language. Photographer Martha Swope and restaurant owners Frances Edelstein, Harry Edelstein and Vincent Sardi Jr. were also honored for their contributions to the Great White Way.
“The magic of Broadway exists not only on stage - or in the minds of writers, directors, and designers,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “It can be found in the creative artistry and dedication of thousands of others who have supported Broadway with their talents, and with their souls … All the more reason that we must do whatever we can, whenever we can, to recognize them for their accomplishments, and their greatness.”
