September 9, 2005 – New York City’s entertainment industry has rallied to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Just a few of the ways in which the industry is making a difference:
The New York Production Alliance (NYPA) has established a Job Assistance program for victims of Hurricane Katrina who have relocated to New York City and are looking for work in the industry. The organization has also established a scholarship fund for the victims. Click here for more information.
On Friday, September 9 at 8:00 pm, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN and the WB networks aired the commercial-free “Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast.” The concert was broadcast in part from New York City, to raise funds for hurricane victims. Click here for more information.
On Saturday, September 10, MTV broadcasted “ReAct Now: Music & Relief Concert,” to raise funds for the American Red Cross, America's Second Harvest and The Salvation Army. MTV is also organizing clothing drives and volunteer efforts to help the victims. Click here for more information.
On Thursday, September 15, the Gotham City Film Festival kicked off with “A Night for New Orleans,” to benefit the Tulane University Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Click here for more information.
On September 25, the theatre community staged “Broadway’s Celebrity Concert for Hurricane Relief,” a performance to raise money for America’s Second Harvest and Quilts for Kids. The producers of Wicked and the Nederlander Organization donated the Gershwin Theatre for the event. Performers included Liza Minnelli, David Hyde-Pierce, Bill Irwin, Phylicia Rashad, Charlotte D’Amboise, Norm Lewis, Julia Murney, Chris Sieber, the casts of The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Hairspray, Mamma Mia and Wicked, and many more.
The National Association of Broadcasters has organized free airtime for public service announcements soliciting donations, donating portable televisions to first responders, and initiated Broadcast Unity, a website which offers resources for radio and television networks seeking to assist in relief efforts. In addition, many Broadway theatres and movie theatres across the City are accepting donations to aid the victims.
