IFP Market Opens Its Doors to Independent Filmmakers Once Again

September 1, 2007 - Now in its 29th year, the annual Independent Feature Project (IFP) Market will take place from September 16-20, 2007 in lower Manhattan. Presented by the Independent Feature Project, a non-profit organization that actively supports the independent film community, the IFP Market will showcase scripts, shorts and narrative and documentary works-in-progress from around the world.

Over 7,000 projects have participated in the IFP Market since it began in 1979 as a sidebar of the New York Film Festival. The IFP Market counts among its alumni filmmakers Kevin Smith (Clerks), Michael Moore (Roger & Me), Barbara Kopple (American Dream), Richard Linklater (Slacker), Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise), Jennie Livingston (Paris Is Burning), Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs) Edward Burns (The Brothers McMullen), and recent films such as the Oscar-winning documentary Born Into Brothels, and Oscar-nominated films Maria Full of Grace, Half Nelson and Mad Hot Ballroom.

The IFP Market is dedicated to fostering the development of independent productions. In presenting a selection of approximately 170 projects from over 1600 submissions, the IFP seeks to connect the chosen screenwriters, directors and producers with agents, buyers, festival programmers and distributors. To develop and strengthen business relationships, the IFP Market schedules one-on-one meetings between participating filmmakers and industry executives. IFP Market also offers documentary screenings, workshops, special events and networking opportunities.

“It makes sense that New York City, the home of independent film, plays host to the world’s only event which exclusively serves as an incubator for the creation of new film projects each year,” says Michelle Byrd, Executive Director, IFP. “The IFP Market serves as a national convening of the world’s leading independent filmmakers as they seek to advance their projects from script to screen.”

New York City is the largest and most important center of independent filmmaking in the United States, offering unparalleled locations and rich incentives for the industry. When filmmakers shoot in our City, they support an industry which employs 100,000 New Yorkers, supports 4,000 local businesses, contributes $5 billion to our City’s economy on an annual basis, and brings the beauty and energy of our city to audiences across the globe.
