August Film Festivals Celebrate New York

September 1, 2007 - Running from August 21-25, the third annual Central Park Film Festival paid tribute once again to one of the most filmed parks in the world. The Central Park Conservancy featured free outdoor screenings of Staying Alive, The Out-of-Towners, Kramer vs. Kramer and Madagascar. These “Made in NY” films were screened in Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield each evening.

The festival highlights the beauty and versatility of one of New York City’s most iconic and film-friendly locations. Central Park made its debut in the 1908 silent movie Romeo and Juliet. Since then, it has starred in more than 200 films, including An Affair to Remember (1957), Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Out-of-Towners (1970), The Way We Were (1973), Marathon Man (1976), Manhattan (1979), Hair (1979), Ghostbusters (1983), Brewster’s Millions (1984), Fatal Attraction (1987), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995), Vanilla Sky (2001), Two Weeks Notice (2002) and Anger Management (2003).

The ACE (American Cinematic Experience) Film Festival also returned to New York in the late summer. Taking place August 24-26 in the Broad Street Ballroom (41 Broad Street), the ACE Film Festival screened over thirty short, full-length, student, animated and documentary features. ACE presented the world premiere of Robert Liano’s and Tom Coppola’s A Broad Way – a documentary shot over a one hour period by more than 400 filmmakers who were spread across New York City’s Broadway.

The ACE Film Festival's primary purpose is to provide a platform for promoting domestic-made works. “Our goal is to spread cinematic patriotism throughout the country,” said founders Thomas O’Malley and Luke Szczygielski. “The ACE Film Festival is dedicated to bringing together the best hands in American filmmaking.” In 2007 the ACE Film Festival joined New York’s River to River Festival, the world’s largest summer-long free festival.

Tickets for the festival included access to film screenings and Club Ace, an on-site venue with various amenities and networking opportunities. A portion of ticket proceeds were donated to the New York Foundation for the Arts.
