September 1, 2006 - 1950s New York is the setting in Bob Dylan's latest music video for his new single, “When the Deal Goes Down.” Actress Scarlett Johansson stars in the video, which shot in Coney Island's famous Astroland Amusement Park, Dino's Wonder Wheel, and the New York Aquarium. These famous landmarks around Brooklyn were used for their nostalgic appeal. Assistant location manager Josh Brenner explained that “because these areas haven't been updated in a while, they have an old feeling to them. The Cyclone, the wooden carousel - they bring back memories of fun times in the 1950s.”
The cinematic style of the video also evokes a different era of filmmaking because of cinematographer Adam Kimmel's use of 30-year-old hand-held cameras to shoot the video, making it appear as if it were actually made in the 1950s. Director Bennett Miller, who also directed the feature film Capote, shot images of Scarlett Johansson pushing her hands up against the walrus tank in the NY Aquarium. With only light from the walrus tank and Johansson in a vintage dress, location manager Kevin Breslin explained that the whole piece has a very “organic, simplistic look” to it.
“What was so great about shooting in New York was the quickness of it all. We were able to rent an old fishing boat out of Sheepshead Bay and shoot Scarlett looking at the Statue of Liberty, and then we were able to get right to the beach at Fort Tilden. The shoot moved really fast. With the beach's sand dunes, the location was able to double for Montauk, Amagansett, or the Hamptons,” added Breslin. It was fun to film in the old arcades of Coney Island. It brought you back in time.”
