Runway Rooted in NYC

August 1, 2004 - Miramax Television has cast New York City as the home of Project Runway, a new reality show that will begin production in Manhattan this month. The project focuses on aspiring designers who live and work in the fashion district, one of New York City’s many unique and cinematic neighborhoods.

The contenders will be given the resources of top designers and challenged to create runway shows for New York Fall Fashion Week. The program will begin with twelve contestants, with design challenges that result in weekly cuts. The final winner will receive a spread in a fashion magazine and a chance to produce his or her work for retail.

The show will be executive produced by Miramax co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein. Additional producers include Heidi Klum, Desiree Gruber and Jane Cha in New York as well as Miramax producers Eli Holzman and Barbara Schneeweiss.

"New York is the capital of American -- if not world -- fashion, so there is no better venue than Seventh Avenue's fashion district for a show that takes viewers behind the scrim into the inner working of the fashion industry,” Miramax Television producer Eli Holzman said. “Miramax is a New York company through and through, and we're always looking for opportunities to showcase the city we love and call home."

“It is a pleasure to welcome this Miramax production to New York City,” Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting said. “We are pleased to roll out the red carpet for Project Runway, and offer the unparalleled locations and production resources available only in New York City.”
