Angels, Sopranos and Sex Top Emmy Nominees

July 19, 2004 - New York City productions have taken an incredible 102 nominations for Primetime Emmy awards! The HBO film Angels in America has received 21 nominations, the most of any production, followed by The Sopranos with 20 nominations.

In particular, New York City productions have been highlighted for excellence in comedy and drama. Gotham took all of the nominations for Outstanding Variety in a Music or Comedy Series, with nominations for Chapelle’s Show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Late Show with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live . New York City also dominates in the fields of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie; Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series; Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video for a Series; Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series; Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program; and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For a Drama Series.

“The significant number of primetime Emmy nominations that New York City-based television shows have received is a testament to our City’s major presence in this industry,” Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting said. “We congratulate all of the nominees and look forward to cheering on New York City’s productions during the awards ceremony this September.”
