July 1, 2007 - The legacy of theater, television and film actor Jerry Orbach lives on. In a dedication ceremony on June 21 at 6:30pm, the theater that is currently housing a revival of the musical “The Fantastics” at the Snapple Theater Center on 50th Street and Broadway was renamed the “Jerry Orbach Theater.” Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, presented a mayoral proclamation in tribute. “Whereas the late, great Jerry Orbach was a New York institution with undeniable acting chops and star power,” stated Oliver, “Jerry’s proudest contributions were always as a citizen and a community leader.” Karen Ziemba, a Tony nominee for the Broadway musical Curtains, performed.
Theatre and television veterans Tom Jones, Bebe Neuwirth and Sam Waterston Sam Waterston, fellow actor of the long running Law & Order series, joined the ceremony to speak about his co-star’s many contributions to the entertainment community. In addition to starring as police detective Lennie Briscoe on Law & Order, Orbach pursued a wide range of dramatic roles. He commanded the lead in Broadway productions such as “Chicago” and “Guys and Dolls” and acted in numerous feature films including Crimes and Misdemeanors, Dirty Dancing and Prince of the City. Screens will be placed in front of the theater entrance and will display footage from Orbach’s frequent performances.
