July 1, 2006 - On June 28, Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (MOFTB), joined with members of the City Council to announce the formation of a task force which will work to increase diversity in the City's film industry.
The MOFTB's "Made in NY" incentive program has created a record number of new jobs and revenue for the City in the entertainment industry, and the City is committed to ensuring that a diverse group of New Yorkers have access to these positions. Over the past year, the MOFTB has launched three innovative programs to accomplish these goals:
Free Production Assistant training programs are teaching crew members to work collaboratively with the neighborhoods in which they shoot and connecting New Yorkers from diverse backgrounds with training for and job opportunities in the production industry.
The "Made in NY" discount card is driving business from the production industry to local businesses across all five boroughs.
And in partnership with the City's Department of Small Business Services, the IFP workforce training program is supporting New Yorkers who work in the film industry by allocating federal funds to independent films which hire crew members at advanced job levels and train them for their new positions.
Over the coming year, the task force will work to build upon and expand the success of these programs.
