June 30, 2004 - New York City is gearing up for the fifth annual New York International Latino Film Festival, which will take place from July 27-August 1 at the Florence Gould Hall on East 59th Street. On June 23, Mayor Bloomberg joined with festival organizers to announce the upcoming festival and to lend support for the event on behalf of the City.
The festival is being staged with support from the New York City Latin Media and Entertainment Commission (LMEC), whose mission is to make New York City the Latin media and entertainment capital of the world. “With the support of our partners, the festival will continue to provide Latino filmmakers with the opportunity to highlight the diversity of our culture on film,” Calixto Chinchilla, executive director of the Festival, said. “Over the past five years, we have built a solid reputation for being a platform to showcase Latino filmmakers and Latino film, and this year's offering is our strongest and most diverse yet.”
The festival will include screenings of a diverse mix of more than 60 films that showcase the work of Latino filmmakers and the Latino experience. About half of the films were shot in New York City. The festival will open with the U.S. premiere of “Imagining Argentina,” starring Antonio Banderas, Emma Thompson and Ruben Blades, which tells the story of a family living under military rule in 1970's Argentina.
