Great White Way Makes History

May 1, 2004 - Times Square celebrated its 100th birthday this month - which means, in addition to 39 theatres, the Broadway district is also packed with a whole lot of history!
From 1891, when the first theatre was lit up on Broadway, to 1988, when most of Broadway's theatres were designated as landmarks, the story of New York City's theatre community is full of drama, comedy and all the elements of a great script.

History buffs may now access "The History of Theatre in New York City," a section of the agency's website which pays tribute to the trials, triumphs and talent that characterize the past century on Broadway.
