March 22, 2007 - The Urban Visionaries Youth Film Festival – which marks its 10th anniversary this year – will take place on March 29th and March 30th, 2007 at the Museum of Television and Radio in Manhattan. The festival showcases fiction, documentary, and experimental videos created by young filmmakers that explore issues affecting young people today. All the work screened in the festival is created by teens; entries are reviewed and selected by a volunteer committee of young people who critique and celebrate the work of their peers.
”Urban Visionaries began as a series of screenings at small neighborhood organizations. Ten years later, it’s a full-fledged youth media festival,” said Wendy Cheung, Festival Coordinator. “This year we expect to reach some 1,500 young people in New York City and beyond.”
Highlights of this year’s festival include: screenings of fiction, documentary and experimental videos by young producers; a popular “video slam,” (an open mic for young filmmakers); youth performances of poetry, music, and dance; panel discussion; and a youth-led Media EXPO at Manhattan Neighboorhood Network, where young people from around the city attend workshops on media-making and analysis.
In honor of the 10th anniversary, there will be a screening of a retrospective about the Urban Visionaries Youth Film Festival followed by a sponsor reception at Tribeca Cinemas on April 3, 2007. This retrospective will then be screened at several New York Public Library locations following the festival, reaching more youth across the city long after the festival has wrapped.
Over the past 10 years, thousands of youth have attended the Urban Visionaries festival and more than a hundred young people have served on the Youth Committees. For details on the 10th Annual Urban Visionaries Youth Film Festival, scroll down!
