The Theatre Museum’s Times Square Theatres Exhibition Now Playing

By Samantha Parisi
February 2, 2007 - The Theatre Museum is currently running Times Square Theatres: A New Century/A New Style, an exhibition at the Municipal Arts Society, now through March 7, 2007. The Municipal Arts Society is located at 457 Madison Avenue at 51st St in New York City. The exhibition explores the various styles of Broadway theatres of the 20th century, including the Art Nouveau style at the turn of the century and the popular Renaissance style of the 1930s. It continues to examine the new Broadway after the Depression and Word War II and proceeds to the future of Times Square Theatres.

One of the exhibition’s most striking features are the preserved artifacts from each of the 12 showcased theatres, illustrating their architecture with plans and photographs. It includes such theatres as the New Amsterdam, Shubert, Palace, Biltmore, Marquis and American Airlines (Selwyn). A walking tour of the theatres will be available on Saturday, March 3, 2007 from 11am to 1pm beginning on the steps of the New Victory Theatre on 42nd Street.

Additionally, there will be community outreach to schools in collaboration with Inside Broadway, The New Victory Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Roundabout Theater’s Education Programs. Also, Craig Morrison, curator of the exhibition, will hold a lecture on Wednesday, February 21, entitled “Another Op’nin’, Another Theatre – Broadway’s Evolution,” on the challenges architects faced building theatres in the 20th century. The Theatre Museum is New York State’s first and only chartered, non-profit theatre committed to the history of theatre.
