January 1, 2005 - New York City productions sprinkled holiday cheer throughout the City last month, as they organized donations to support the communities in which they shoot.
Good Morning America sponsored its 4th annual toy drive with Toys R Us this year, donating $1 million to kick off the event and drumming up support for the drive with viewers across the country. “Every year we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our viewers and people around the country," Tony Perkins, weather forecaster for Good Morning America said. "This is our fourth annual toy drive and it's our most successful toy drive yet! We enjoy being a part of something that makes children smile. Bringing joy to those in need is really what the holiday season is all about." The show raised over $5 million to support Marine’s Toys For Tots.
In Brooklyn, Third Watch’s thespians rang in the New Year remembering the New York City Police Foundation and the American Cancer Society with generous monetary donations. The crew also filled two large boxes of toys which they donated to the FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention for St. Vincent’s Children's services.
And for The Today Show’s holiday drive, celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker and Jim Carrey collected donations from visitors to Rockefeller Plaza. The show amassed toys, books, clothing and electronics that benefited more than 750,000 children.
In addition to donating to the communities in which they work, New York City productions generate $5 billion for the City’s economy on an annual basis and employ 100,000 New Yorkers.
