Peter J. Ganci, Jr.
Chief of Department
The Fire Department, City of New York,
currently is enjoying an almost unprecedented approval
rating from the general public. This does not surprise
me. And, it shouldnt surprise you. The U.S. Postal
Service has a motto to the effect that neither
rain nor snow shall prevent us from making our appointed
rounds. Truthfully, that motto is far more appropriate
to the Fire Department--we always respond--no matter
the weather, incident or degree of difficulty. Wherever
needed, we go. While a dangerous and difficult job,
firefighting is still the best profession of all. Always
remember how highly regarded you are by your peers and
officers, as well as the citizens and visitors to this
city. FDNY is the one department to which all others
look and seek to emulate. It is an enormous responsibility
to be number one, but you are up to it. Heartiest congratulations
to this years Medal Day winners.
