***MEDIA ADVISORY***

GEN. VICTOR RENUART, HEAD OF U.S. NORTHERN COMMAND AND NORTH AMERICAN AEROSPACE DEFENSE COMMAND, MEETS WITH COMMISSIONER SCOPPETTA AND CHIEFS TOMORROW TO DISCUSS DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND HOW LOCAL AND FEDERAL AGENCIES WORK TOGETHER ON HOMELAND SECURITY ISSUES

General Victor E. Renuart, the head of NORAD and NORTHCOM, a key homeland defense center at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, will visit FDNY Headquarters tomorrow to discuss how the city and the U.S. Department of Defense can share information and coordinate resources to even better respond in the event of a terrorist attack or other disaster. “Working together, we can build upon the safety and security of this city and our nation,” Commissioner Scoppetta said. “The vast resources and capabilities of the U.S. military connected with the local expertise and highly-trained staff at this department should assure everyone we’re ready to respond in any emergency.”

The visit will highlight each organization’s work on domestic preparedness and how both can share information in “real time” under various scenarios. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the city, state and federal governments have been working to better understand and integrate each other’s operations. Thursday’s visit is evidence of that effort.

Reporters will have the opportunity to interview Gen. Renuart, Commissioner Scoppetta and Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano in the Fire Department Operations Center between 10:35 and 10:55 a.m. Thursday. Media interested in attending should gather in the lobby of FDNY Headquarters no later than 10 a.m., so enough time is allowed to clear security and set up equipment.

USNORTHCOM, located in Colorado Springs, Colo., is the military organization formed in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to provide homeland defense and defense support of federal, state and local civil authorities. NORAD is the bi-national command charged with aerospace detection and warning as well as maritime detection and warning for the air and sea approaches to the United States and Canada. A four-star general, Renuart has given 37 years of service to the military and served as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense prior to his current assignment.
