Interagency Coordinating Counci on Youth

ICC Meetings and Hearing

Recent topics featured at ICC meetings include High Risk Teen Behaviors, Volunteer Opportunities Impacting Youth and Communities, Serving Youth with Emotional and Behavioral Challenges and assisting the parents of youth, whose children have come in contact with the law, to navigate the criminal justice system.

The Interagency Coordinating Council (ICC) on Youth Annual Public Hearing was held at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Main Branch at Grand Army Plaza on July 15, 2010.  It was standing room only as over 200 young people representing a wide array of community-based organizations from around the City attended. Many spoke about their personal experiences and offered commentary on ways to improve services for youth.

The theme of the hearing was Youth Accessing Resources and Information and featured presentations by New York City’s three library systems, Brooklyn, New York and Queens. The libraries highlighted their use of technology in reaching out to young people and the vast resources offered by their institutions for youth.  This includes HomeworkNYC web page that features home work assistance as well as access to a host of additional web based services. A new ICC Work Group, Accessing Information, was launched to explore ways that young people and families can better navigate services and provide access to a broad spectrum of programs.

Through these efforts the ICC is advancing “best practices” and turning recommendations and strategies developed by city agencies, educators and providers into guidelines.  By doing so the necessary partnerships are created that will lead to a “culture of success” for our youth.
