ICC Meeting highlights LGBTQ Commission Report
On November 30, 2010 the Interagency Coordinating Council on Youth (ICC) held a meeting at Mount Sinai Medical Center in East Harlem. The 60 audience members in attendance included nonprofit providers and city agencies who participated in a panel discussion led by Commissioner Jeanne B. Mullgrav, which highlighted the work of the Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Runaway and Homeless Youth. Panelist included two Commission Members, Dr. Angela Diaz, Director of Mount Sinai’s Adolescent Health Center, and Theresa Nolan, Director of NYC Programs Green Chimneys Children’s Services and Susan Haskell, DYCD’s Assistant Commissioner for Vulnerable and Special Needs Youth. The meeting concluded with the launching of the Supporting LGBTQ Youth Work Group, chaired by Robin Causey, the City’s Runaway and Homeless Youth Coordinator.

The ICC annual report summarizes the Council’s activities during the past year and showcases the important work of members to address the myriad of issues facing young people. The focus of the past year includes youth violence prevention, helping transition-aged youth better access information, and enhancing services for LGBTQ youth. |

”Youth Behavioral Challenges Sub-Committee Report” provides a five point cross-agency action plan to meet the needs of young people with behavioral challenges. These include 1) Improve needs assessment and planning; 2) Stronger collaboration among after school providers, schools, community-based mental health services and families to share information and identify existing resources to meet children’s needs; 3) Develop guidance among after school providers; 4) Increased training and technical assistance; and 5) Specialized after school services for youth who cannot be effectively served in non-specialized programs. |
