NYC DOT Continues Seasonal Pothole Repair Efforts, Deploying 65 Crews Across All Five Boroughs This Weekend and Planning Additional Targeted Work on Residential Streets And Highways
Agency to dispatch 50 crews on Saturday and at least 15 on Sunday, targeting residential streets and major, arterial roadways citywide; additional crews to focus on key roadways next week
DOT has already filled more than 64,000 potholes since January 1 and will address additional stretches of the Belt and Bronx River parkways beginning Sunday
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Polly Trottenberg today announced the latest efforts in the agency’s season-long pothole repair program, building on the more than 64,000 already filled by crews across the boroughs this year. This Saturday, February 8, DOT will dispatch a year-high 50 crews, hitting all five boroughs and targeting residential streets and arterial roadways. Then on Sunday, February 9, an additional 15 crews will focus again on arterials, with additional efforts on residential streets citywide. This follows the previously-announced targeted efforts on key roadways, and additional work planned along portions of the Belt Parkway, Bronx River Parkway and other critical roadways across the city as the agency continues to tackle this year’s significant winter weather.
“I want to thank the men and women on DOT’s roadway crews who are working around the clock to maintain the 6,000 miles of City streets during this harsh winter,” said Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “These tireless public servants have already repaired 64,000 potholes across the boroughs this year – a record-setting pace – and will be filling many more given the snowstorms the City has already faced this winter and the wear and tear that inflicts. Our hard-working crews will be on the job throughout the City every day.”
In addition to this weekend’s 65 planned crews and this evening’s previously announced work on the westbound Belt Parkway between Knapp Street and Flatbush Avenue, DOT will be targeting additional work areas in the boroughs and along major arterials in the coming week. Beginning Monday, as many as four specialized crews will address additional residential streets for resurfacing each day, including the Sheridan Expy. southbound service road between Westchester Ave. and Freeman St. and Exterior S. between E. 138th St. and Third Ave. in the Bronx; 37th St. between 14th Ave. and 15th Ave. and 52nd St. between 16th Ave. and 17th Ave. in Brooklyn; the Long Island Expy. eastbound service road between Little Neck Pkwy. and the Nassau Border and 149th St. at 27th Ave. in Queens; and South Ave. between Chelsea Rd. and Meredith Ave., Amboy Rd. between Page Ave. and Bedell St. and Richmond Terr. between Broadway and Van St. in Staten Island.
Additionally, on Sunday, February 9, crews will resurface portions of the northbound Bronx River Parkway between the Cross Bronx Expressway and Sagamore Street. Two of three lanes will be closed between 6:00 a.m. until 3 p.m. that afternoon. This partial closure will allow for work on areas requiring maintenance, including both milling and paving, speeding the reopening of the Parkway. Drivers can use Exit 4 for the Cross Bronx Expressway, and are urged to avoid the work area if possible and use alternate routes.
Then on Monday, February 10, crews will resurface additional portions of the eastbound Belt Parkway, between the Verrazano Bridge and Bay 8 Street. As with previous work on the Belt, two of three eastbound lanes will be closed in this section from that evening at 8:30 p.m. until 3:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 11. Drivers may use Exit 2 for 4th Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway during this period and are again urged to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes. This marks the latest in several additional, overnight maintenance efforts along the Belt planned for the coming weeks, which will be announced as details are available.
All these resurfacing efforts come as DOT continues seasonal pothole and street maintenance work across the boroughs as part of the continuing response to this season’s heavy snow. Already this year, DOT has addressed more than 64,000 potholes across the city, including more than 25,000 on arterial roadways like the Belt Parkway.
