NYC DOT Commissioner Sadik-Khan, NYC Bike Share Announce that Citi Bike Exceeds 250,000 Rides in Less Than Three Weeks

25,000 new annual members signed up since launch, more than 32,000 daily and weekly members in two weeks

New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and New York City Bike Share today announced that Citi Bike has exceeded 250,000 rides in less than three weeks of operation, with riders traveling nearly 700,000 miles on their bikes, or enough to circle the Earth 28 times. Citi Bike riders logged 50 percent more trips in the system’s second 10 days of operation than in the first 10 days as thousands of new members sign up for the system daily. There are more than 40,000 annual members—25,000 of whom signed up since the system launched May 27—and more than 32,000 daily and weekly memberships have been sold since they went on sale two weeks ago.

“Barely three weeks after its debut, Citi Bike is pedaling past ridership records,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. “With a quarter-million trips and counting, bike share is building momentum as thousands of New Yorkers and visitors discover this great way to get around the city.”

Citi Bike launched on May 27 to annual members and June 2 to those purchasing daily and weekly passes with a credit card at station kiosks in the initial service area, including Manhattan below 59th Street and in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene and DUMBO, with bike share stations located every few blocks. Citi Bike is the nation’s largest bike share system and is funded by a $41 million sponsorship from Citi, one of the world’s leading global banks, and without City subsidy. Annual members receive an electronic key to undock a bike from any station, allowing unlimited trips up to 45 minutes without incurring any additional costs. Twenty-four-hour and seven-day access passes provide unlimited 30-minute trips.
