NYC DOT, NYC Bike Share Announce That Citi Bike Exceeds 10,000 Annual Members Within One Month

Rate of membership surpasses that of any other bike share program in North America

New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and New York City Bike Share today announced that as of this afternoon, 10,000 people have signed up for annual Citi Bike memberships, greatly exceeding the rate of registrations for any other bike share system as excitement builds for Citi Bike’s May 27 launch. The system, designed by and for New Yorkers, now has more people signed up in the first four weeks of accepting members than Boston has after two years of operation. New members can sign up at citibikenyc.com.

“Now 10,000 members strong and counting, Citi Bike is generating more excitement than we’ve ever seen for a new transportation option and there’s no sign of it stopping,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. “With less than two weeks until launch, there’s still time for New Yorkers to sign up and be the first to unlock a bike and to unlock the city on Memorial Day.”

New Yorkers who sign up by May 17 will receive their Citi Bike key in time to have exclusive access to the system starting Memorial Day. Annual memberships cost $95 for unlimited 45-minute trips, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. The system opens to daily and weekly memberships on June 2. The initial service area includes Manhattan below 59th Street and the neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn. Citi Bike operates at no cost to taxpayers.
