NYC DOT Rehabilitating Bruckner Expressway Bridges Over Railroad Tracks Near Bronx River

Two westbound lanes will be diverted onto service road for 500 feet for one weekend

Due to this and associated diversions and detours, motorists are advised to use alternate routes

As part of the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) project to rehabilitate the Bruckner Expressway Bridges over the Amtrak/CSX Railroad tracks near the Bronx River, an upcoming phase of work to reconstruct the westbound Expressway bridge and approach ramps will require the weekend diversion of the two westbound lanes of the Bruckner Expressway onto the service road from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5 until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8. This diversion, which has already been in place weeknights since June, will take through-traffic along the service road for approximately 500 feet, after which traffic will be able to return to the Expressway. Westbound Bruckner Boulevard will be closed to traffic at Bronx River Avenue and motorists will be directed to use Westchester and Whitlock avenues to rejoin Bruckner Boulevard. To facilitate this detour, exit 51 of the westbound Bruckner Expressway will be closed during the weekend, while the Westchester Avenue exit of the northbound Sheridan Expressway will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes.

DOT has contacted other agencies including MTA Bridges & Tunnels and New York State Department of Transportation to notify drivers of the closure using overhead variable message signs on major roadways in the area. Motorists affected by the westbound Bruckner Boulevard diversion and the closure of the Westchester Avenue exit from the northbound Sheridan Expressway should follow the posted detours. DOT will install temporary signs along the routes and will take steps to mitigate the potential impact of additional traffic on these streets by adjusting signal timing and coordinating with NYPD to deploy Traffic Control Agents at key intersections.

The posted detour route is as follows from westbound Bruckner Boulevard:

Turn right on Bronx River Avenue, then left on Westchester Avenue and left again on Whitlock Avenue to rejoin Bruckner Boulevard.
