DOT to Install New Traffic Signal in Fort Greene

New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Iris Weinshall today announced the activation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Greene Avenue and Adelphi Street in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. DOT received a request from the community in the spring of 2006 and engineers performed a traffic study over the summer. A new traffic signal was approved for this location in the early fall and it was installed and activated on December 22, 2006.

"The community had expressed concern about this intersection and I want to thank them for bringing it to our attention," said DOT Commissioner Weinshall. "We will continue to monitor this intersection to ensure that we are doing everything we can to keep the neighborhood safe."

DOT often receives requests from the public for new traffic signals. Traffic engineers are then dispatched to examine the existing conditions at each location. Factors such as vehicular and pedestrian volumes, accident experience, vehicular speeds, visibility, signal spacing and the proximity of schools are all taken into consideration.

DOT engineers evaluate this activity, using standards established by the federal government, to determine the best means to assign right-of-way at the particular location. They may also evaluate if other measures, such as speed limit signs, narrowing of lanes, speed reducers, or increased traffic enforcement are necessary.

The standards for traffic control devices can be found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which is published by the Federal Highway Administration.
