DOT Announces the Restoration of Two-Way Traffic on the Steinway Street Bridge

The New York City Department of Transportation today announced the opening of north and southbound traffic of the Steinway Street Bridge over the Grand Central Parkway. This reopening will restore two-way vehicular traffic on the newly reconstructed portion of the bridge and will eliminate the temporary southbound Steinway Street traffic detour along Astoria Boulevard North and across the 37th Street Bridge over the Grand Central Parkway. The newly reconstructed western portion of the bridge will also feature a temporary timber walkway for pedestrian/bicycle use.

Work on the eastern portion of the bridge has begun and is expected to be completed by October 2007, at which time the entire project will be completed. The following traffic patterns will be in effect through October 2007.

Pedestrian/Bicycle Access: New pedestrian/bicycle walkway along western portion of Steinway Street Bridge.

37th Street and 43rd Street Overpasses: On Monday, October 30, 2006, two-way traffic (northbound/southbound) will be restored on these overpasses between Astoria Boulevard North and South.
