DOT Names New Staten Island Borough Commissioner

Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall today named Thomas Curitore the New York City Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Staten Island Borough Commissioner. Curitore, who joins DOT after 4 years as First Deputy Commissioner in the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit (CAU), is a native and life-long resident of Staten Island and has served the City for 20 years.

“Tom’s got some big shoes to fill, but we’re confident that he has the experience and dedication to get things done on Staten Island,” said Commissioner Weinshall. “Our Borough Commissioners are our direct link to the community and Tom has a proven track record of effectively working with residents and civic organization in all five boroughs. We’re really excited to have him on board.”

“I’ve traveled these roads everyday for 43 years and Staten Island has changed a lot in that time,” said Curitore. “I’m excited to be working on my home turf and feel privileged to have the opportunity to serve my fellow islanders.”

Curitore began his career with the City in 1986, working as a NYPD patrolman in the first precinct. From 1988 to 1994, as a Community Affairs/Equal Employment Opportunity Liaison, he worked closely with various City agencies and civic organizations to coordinate special events, including the 1992 Democratic National Convention. He also coordinated the Auxiliary Police program in Manhattan below 59 th Street. Before joining the CAU, Curitore worked in the Organized Crime Control Bureau, the Chief Detective’s Office, and until 2002 served as the Governor’s Liaison for the Intelligence Divisions’ Protective Intelligence Unit.

As First Deputy Commissioner at the CAU, Curitore has played a pivotal role in carrying forward the Mayor’s City and borough-wide initiatives to improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers. Serving as the Mayor’s “eyes and ears” in the field, the CAU works throughout the five boroughs to bring the services of the City’s departments directly to New York’s diverse neighborhoods.

In his new role, Curitore will assume the responsibilities of long-time Borough Commissioner, John Giaccio, who was promoted in January to oversee DOT’s facilities division, including over-seeing the construction of the St. George and Whitehall Ferry Terminals.
