Single Space Parking Meters to Accept NYC Parking Cards

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) today announced that 1,100 single space parking meters in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens will, for the first time, accept payments made with a pre-paid NYC Parking Card beginning Monday, August 15, 2005. The three month pilot program will allow DOT to assess the practicality of offering drivers a second payment option at single space meters.

The areas to be studied are:

In Brooklyn

  • Fifth Avenue from 91st Street to Bay Ridge Parkway - 266 meters.

In Manhattan

  • Broadway, Amsterdam Avenue, Columbus Avenue and the intersecting East/West Streets from West 72nd Street to West 86th Street - 655 meters.

In Queens

  • Queens Boulevard from Yellowstone Boulevard to 72nd Drive and Yellowstone Boulevard from Austin Street to Exeter Street - 179 meters

To familiarize drivers with the NYC Parking Card, DOT will distribute flyers to merchants, motorists, community boards, and local elected officials in the study areas, and provide short term, on site coaching once the meters begin accepting the pre-paid cards. Additionally, bright yellow decals will be installed on all of the meters accepting NYC Parking Cards and additional signage will be posted.

The locations to be studied are all densely populated commercial zones with a large demand for metered parking. Data will be collected from the meters on a weekly basis and aggregated to determine card/cash usage patterns.

NYC Parking Cards can be purchased in $20 and $50 denominations at the DOT Web site (www.nyc.gov/dot), by mail and at City Store locations.
