DOT Announces Installation of Muni Meters Along Fordham Road in The Bronx
Muni Meters are installed at intervals along the sidewalk to replace traditional parking meters. This type of meter improves the streetscape, increases sidewalk width, records accurate time, and adds additional parking spaces by not requiring motorists to park directly in front of a meter.
"Increasing the number of available parking spaces is a great benefit that Muni Meters offer," said Commissioner Iris Weinshall. "Extra parking on Fordham Road will help both businesses and shoppers."
In addition to quarters and dollar coins, Muni Meters also accept NYC Parking Cards, which can be purchased in $20 and $50 denominations through the DOT Web site, by mail and at City Store locations. To date, DOT has installed 1,561 Muni Meters City wide, while removing an estimated 8,000 traditional parking meters. The first parking meter was installed in 1951, by DOT on West 125th Street between 7th and Lenox Avenues. Today there are approximately 64,000 parking meters in the five boroughs.
