Specialized monitoring and treatment services are available to people who may still be sick from 9/11. A combination of city, federal and private funding has made treatment, medications and counseling available at no out-of-pocket cost. In addition, the Health Department published the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Bulletin
. The bulletin offers city residents advice on how to get information, treatment and help for 9/11-related health problems, such as free diagnostic and treatment services at the WTC Centers of Excellence.
A Word about Screening
Medical screening programs help health care professionals determine if patients have specific kinds of health problems. Screening (and continued monitoring over time) with no out-of-pocket costs to WTC rescue and recovery workers is available through the WTC Health Program no matter where they live now. No such screening program currently exists for people who did not participate in the rescue, recovery and clean-up operations, but monitoring and treatment services are available for anyone with symptoms that physicians believe may be related to their exposure to the WTC disaster.
WTC Centers of Excellence
The WTC Centers of Excellence provide specialized testing and treatment in the New York City area:
World Trade Center Environmental Health Center at Bellevue Hospital Center, Gouverneur Health Care Services and Elmhurst Hospital Center
The Fire Department of New York: The World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program
Mount Sinai Consortium: The World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program
The WTC Centers of Excellence offer:
- Monitoring, treatment and medication for WTC-related illnesses with no out-of-pocket costs to patients
- Treatment by health professionals specializing in 9/11-related conditions
- Assistance with applying for 9/11-related benefits, such as Workers' Compensation
People who participated in WTC rescue, recovery and clean-up operations but who live outside the New York City area may be eligible for monitoring and treatment services funded by the federal government with no out-of-pocket costs. Please call (877) 498-2911 for more information.
