Summer Camps

Type of Camps

All camps with 10 or more children are required to have a permit from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. There are several types of summer camps:

Day Camp | Day Camp (Municipal) | Special Needs Day Camp | Travelling Day Camp | Overnight Camp

Day Camp

Serves children under the age of 16 years old for the general purpose of organized group activities. There are no provisions made for overnight stay.

Day Camp (Municipal)

Camps operated by City agencies, usually by the New York City Housing Authority or the Department of Parks and Recreation. Serves children under the age of 16 years old for the general purpose of organized group activities. There are no provisions made for overnight stay.

Special Needs Day Camp

For the purposes of this directory, these are camps which serve children who are developmentally disabled, physically disabled or have other special needs for the general purpose of organized group activities. Camps with 20% or more developmentally disabled campers are subject to additional regulations.

Traveling Day Camp

Serves children under the age of 16 years old who are transported to the camp site each day. The camp site is usually only used as a meeting point from which the camp leaves to go on trips.

Overnight Camp

Serves children under 18 years old for 24 hours a day at the camp site, which has sleeping facilities. In New York City, these camps are usually located on the campus of a college or university.
